HDSH Speaking Buddy is an online tool helping students improve their English pronunciation and build up their so much-needed confidence to speak clearly without hesitation. It has been developed by the IT Department and the International Affairs Office here at Huey Deng High School (HDSH), Taiwan. Seeing the effect on our students' development and motivation, we have decided to share this website for free with our partners, other learners, and educators around the world hoping they will, too, benefit from this convenient aid on their journey toward higher English proficiency and joy of using this beautiful language confidently.
Speaking Buddy allows students to listen to the text input at their preferred speed. Students record themselves reading the passage, and then Speaking Buddy compares their pronunciation to the standard one. Students receive immediate feedback on their pronunciation accuracy with the system underlining any mispronounced words. In case of any mispronunciation, it is recommended to listen to the passage again before a new recording. Based on our experience, students tend to keep trying to improve their accuracy and do feel a sense of confidence, pride, and accomplishment every time they manage to pronounce the text better.
It has been an extremely handy tool for teachers when preparing students for presentations, speech competitions, and international projects. Speaking Buddy has saved us hours of going through students’ pronunciation individually. Using this website means that students can try their pronunciation several times per class, all at the same time, with no one waiting for the teacher to be available, and no one repeating mispronounced words because they have not been corrected yet. Of course, it can be used for assignments and homework outside of school.
As with everything, it takes some time to get used to this website, but we believe that it is truly worth it. Please note that, at the moment, Speaking Buddy only works properly when run on Google Chrome on laptops or PCs.
Big thanks to our IT department, International Affairs Office, students, and teachers here at Huey Deng High School, Taiwan for making this happen. Have fun learning (and teaching)!
